Holi is also known as spring festival and it commemorates the victory of good and evil. There is a lot of enthusiasm attached to the festival. The festival of colors is one of the most important festivals in the Indian Culture and Society. The holi festival is an acceptance of all the diversities and cuts across all the cultural differences, be it the caste, class, creed, age etc of a person.
There are also various traditions in this festival. One of them is called Holika Dahan. It refers to the burning of Holika. Holika is an Indian mythological character, and during this day people rejoice over the death and defeat of the character through a symbolic bonfire. The bonfire is encircled by all family members and a ritual is conducted in a bid to ensure good luck, prosperity and happiness.
The day is known as the most significant day as Rangwali Holi. On this day, friends engage in play with and throwing of colors, gulal, at each other. It is a water festival because people play with so much water, water guns and pump things. In India, individuals go to the extent of hiring live bands to dance and sing and transport the party to the streets.
Food festivals are significant as well. During the holidays, a snack is made in the form of traditional and modern candy and a beverage known as thandai. Thandai is prepared in most households and also distributed amongst individuals. People drink thandai again when they are celebrating Holi. Thandai is also the beverage of peace.
Mathura and Vrindavan festival celebrations are very big due to the attachment with lord Krishna. Most of the temples visited there are devotional singing and cultural events held.
